Blueberries for Sal FIAR Study

Hi!
The week before last week, we rowed Blueberries for Sal. But, I didn't have time to post about our studies that week, So today I would like to post about that wonderful week, and then another post of what we have just completed last week.

A Family Favorite! This is from the Before Five in a Row series, However, we have loved doing this book last year, and thought we would do it again.....

Kuplink, kuplank, kuplunk go the blueberries into the pail of a little girl named Sal who--try as she might--just can't seem to pick as fast as she eats. Robert McCloskey's classic is a magical tale of the irrepressible curiosity--not to mention appetite--of youth. Sal and her mother set off in search of blueberries for the winter at the same time as a mother bear and her cub. A quiet comedy of errors ensues when the young ones wander off and absentmindedly trail the wrong mothers. - description by amazon

The first thing we studied in this book was Health and Safety, staying close to MAMA! This is always a challange with my daughter, she is always going one way or another... and never focusing on just standing close to me. So this was a good lesson for her . We read the story of Ruth in the bible,  So now, we have been practicing, "Where you go, I will go" and saying it as we go out about errands etc...

I printed out a story sequence set of the story, this was a huge hit!

We of course made blueberry pancakes!

We spent the rest of the week studying about bears, hibernation, and other animals in the winter, and how they prepare.  These are some of my go along books....

We learned all about bears, where they live, what they eat etc....

We also learned there are 7 differant kinds of bears in the world! They loved this, and it lead us on a few rabbit trails of other bear facts around the world...
Polar bears,

Panda Bears,

For living Math we talked about fractions... to better illustrate this, as they weren't quite getting it with these cute pails
I poured some blue food coloring into water, and we started with one cup, and filled up each other cup till it was full. This made sense to them! and we did it over and over,

and over,

we said for each one. 1/4's full 2/4's full 3/4's full 4/4's full~!

We discussed how mountains and hills are made... and of course a side trail of Mount Everest..... which was very fun for us.

The story takes place in Maine. We have covered several stories on the East coast, so they are becoming very familiar with this area of the US.

Some other lapbook fun... inside the basket flaps are other things made with blueberries, and a fold it book of the way Fruits grow, Plants, bushes and trees.

JT drew some pictures of the story..... for ART.

Kt loves her book, It's her writing book,

I find her ideas for coloring soooo interesting...
here she is to copy one Mat Man to another - Just the lines.. yet after she chose to coloring them in.

This past week i made the kids their own Nature Bags, To keep the nature journal and colors in, and whatever they find outside they want to keep. I made them out of Daddy's cargo shorts! 1 pair for both bags, and some extra fabric...=)

on Jt's I cut out a little baby Tshirt with a pirate and treasure chest on it, and just sewed it on... it says "treasure hunting"

Our sunflowers haven't bloomed but are still growing tall!!!

Some other things we covered this week were:
All about blueberries
vocabulary
Animals classification
and their continued studies in reading and writing. =)

  1. I was wondering where you got your story sequence cards - I'm planning to row this book next week and would love to use them!
